God Save the Queen (Vic)

One of the latest offerings in H Street’s boozy cavalcade (Pug, Smith Commons, Fruit Bat, Granville Moore) is the Queen Vic, a gastropub named after the famous haunt from BBC’s long-running soap opera EastEnders.

Stroll past the eye-catching red facade at 12th and H, NE, sit down at the polished wood bar, and sip on a pint or two — the beer list is solid. Try one of the interesting beer cocktails and watch soccer football on the telly. <britishcliches>

Who knows what the evening has in store — maybe you’ll end up staying for a bite to eat, too, as patrons of gastropubs are wont to do.  If you wankers lamented the closing of Commonwealth up in CoHi, there’s reason to cheer — British food is alive and well in the District.  The Queen Vic’s menu is full of all your British flavorites and even has a few Indian dishes sprinkled in for color. The bangers and mash were rich and tasty, and I overheard glowing cheers about the fish and chips.
All in all it’s just a friendly neighborhood bar with an attentive staff, and you don’t have to compete with the music to converse.  If the more festive ambiance across the street at the Country Club isn’t really your thing, I recommend it.
