Opening Reception for Davis McLane Connelly’s Individuation at The Fridge

Connely bunniesThe Fridge presents Individuation, an exhibition of drawings by Brooklyn-based artist Davis McLane Connelly.

Davis draws youthful figures in lifelike, surrealistic scenarios. In a departure from previous works in this series featuring stuffed toys and anthropomorphic animals, Davis is also showing drawings with human figures as part of his pursuit to fully realize this dream-like exploration of the psyche. Davis is a self-taught artist whose skills as a draftsman earned him a post-graduate residency in Corciano, Italy. His academic training in the field of psychology is the dominant influence in his work. This series is born out of the concept of individuation, the Jungian term for each person’s path to becoming whole.

Davis says, “I want to make work that is visually accessible, and I believe it’s important for everyone to be able to form their own interpretation of my work. I aim to make my drawings aesthetically pleasing so that they appeal to a wide range of viewers. Beyond the immediate aesthetics, there are slightly muted references to greater topics. For example, the words on a magazine, the direction in which light is cast, or the arrangement of the composition will hold clues to a deeper meaning.”

Submerge DC: A No Kings Collective Production

pic courtesy Kris Coronado

Submerge DC is a No Kings Collective pop-up art space in what used to be Fashion One on the H Street Corridor.  What does that even mean?

Also known as a “flash art happening,” the two-floor space houses the artwork of about a dozen local artists.  There is straight up graffiti from local fave Decoy, there are 3D paintings (requisite glasses provided), and downstairs there is an homage to the terra cotta warriors, a la blow-up dolls.

The space is open and free to the public every day from noon to 6pm until the 18th.  That’s this Sunday, so go soon and see what you can see.  There is also evening programming which may or may not cost.  Check the website schedule for more info.

Walking down H Street and seeing the Submerge space did make me glad to live in a city with a vibrant arts scene.  An empty storefront turned into a free arts space does the heart good.

The guy manning hanging out at the front desk told me that the event that night had been cancelled.  I strolled around and took in what I saw.  Some of the old Fashion One flyers were still scattered around the church pews and found objects next to the art; I enjoyed seeing the Buy One Get One flyers letting me know what used to be in this space.  Shades of gentrification?  I digress.

I was pretty much alone with the art, the complete opposite of the crush of people at the opening party on Friday (for more on that, click here for awesome pictures and description).  Reminiscent of the Phillips after 5 events where patrons talk more to each other than glance at the art, I’m afraid the pieces themselves are getting short shrift in favor of the popularity of the arts events.  On the other hand, this is getting people to go out and experience art!

This Friday at 6pm, Submerge will host Get Fashion,

– a fashion, retail, music, food, art, and entertainment (yes. basically everything awesome) event from 6pm-2am. Get Fashion will showcase local designers and vendor retail pop-ups from 6-11pm, live musical performances from 9pm-2am, H Street only  food vendors, local DC brews, and artwork featured in the Submerge exhibition.

Featuring performances by DJ Skim, Pree, Gems, Margot MacDonald and a collaborative set by Adam E and Jeff Boyd.

This event is free and open to public.

So go on out and see it for yourself.  It won’t last long!

Found: Street Art

Outside the Takoma Metro station, this street art was gone within the week, but its proximity to the mouth of the tunnel leading to the elevator was a surprising start to the workday.  And reminiscent of a Shel Silverstein book.

Phillips Collection: Jasper Johns Exhibition Layers onto Rothko

The Phillips Collection, one of the few museums in town I don’t terribly mind paying for (looking at you, Textile Museum) and “America’s first museum of modern art,” houses some of the most astoundingly masterful pieces in the world, all tucked away in a former residence in Dupont. Upon entering (and paying $12), the viewer is overwhelmed with masterpiece after masterpiece…Lichtenstein, Miró, Calder, Renoir, Picasso…on and on.

Then, the crown jewel of the collection, The Boating Party. If you are like me, you saw Amelie at a very formative moment in your life [liberal arts college]. The Boating Party plays as large a part in the movie as Audrey Tautou‘s saucer-sized brown eyes do. And even without the movie, The Boating Party looms large in the permanent exhibition. Not only is it a huge presence, it’s really large. Like, 6 by 9 feet. Andre the Giant-big.  Instead of telling you about each, I advise you to watch Amelie, go see the painting, then come home and watch The Princess Bride.

Besides The Boating Party, the Phillips possesses the Rothko Room, as close to a religious experience as you’re likely to get at the Phillips. The Rothko Room was established decades ago, and a visit from Rothko prompted the Collection to install a bench in the room for more comfortable reflection. With four paintings–one on each wall, the Rothko Room exudes a pious atmosphere. No more than eight people can be inside at a time, enforcing the private experience. As I sat, looking at the painting in front of me, I wondered, How did he know he was finished?  How often can I really call something “finished”?  Is it even possible with the way our brains are conditioned to constant distraction?  Am I doing right now?!

The traveling exhibition on the third floor, Variations on a Theme, belongs to Jasper Johns, a mid-century printmaker. Johns layered and layered, creating the famous number overlay prints and American flags–two together that are each different: Can you see the same things two ways? asks Johns…looking at the political landscape in the country today, I’d have to say sadly, no. Besides layering up, in the seventies Johns also created a series of completely deconstructed scenes, Fragment–According to What, featuring items labeled String, Spoon, Lightbulb, Fork…cubism for the twentieth century?

Did I mention, they have air conditioning!
