Come Down From Your Fences (for a burger)

When you think about the DC burger scene, BGR, Five Guys, Rogue States [currently closed but looking to re-open soon] and Shake Shack seem to get all the press.

Enter the underrated and undermentioned Desperados, a New Orleans-inspired burger joint located on U Street NW between 13th and 14th .

Taking over for neighborhood stalwart Polly’s, they overhauled the menu (which unfortunately means no more brunch with eggs benedict), got rid of that weird smell (finally!), fixed the jukebox and made things a lot brighter. A sorely-needed update, indeed.

Great for a quick lunch or a late night meal, the burgers here are just spectacular — the Cajun one gets especially rave reviews. If you’re thirsty and just looking to wet your whistle, there’s a full bar including a decent beer menu. However, be prepared to wait – the cozy basement has limited seating.

If folding your arms and tapping your feet aren’t your cup of tea, fear not — Desperados also delivers. So next time you’re in the area and get a hankering for Ben’s, I implore you, venture just a block to the west and check this place out, partner.
