I can’t explain it, but I never identified with taxi drivers. And not just DeNiro in that movie. Maybe it was a combination of terrible driving and seemingly abstract refusals to take me anywhere outside the District. But now, I’m starting to see taxi drivers with some pity: like indentured servants or unhappy lawyers with student loans….

Fanny Pack Backlash
Not everyone appreciated my tourist diatribe, especially the fanny pack lovers hiding out there. See below. It’s war DC Style is Real! When Googling the history of the fanny pack, one finds that amazingly enough, it is unknown who first fashioned this convenient, hands-free carrying device, so fondly displayed across the bums of many throughout…
Fanny Pack Attack
Dear Readers, I know you try to ignore them. Goodness knows I do. Gone are the days of chummy conversation on crowded Metro trains, “Where are you all from?!” Gone are the days of patiently waiting for someone to notice they shouldn’t be standing on the left of the only working escalator. Gone gone GONE! …
At Last, The Gibson
It may just be that all liberal arts majors who come to DC have a soft spot for The Great Gatsby. Where are my nights filled with dancing and sophistication? they ask, as they dolefully shuffle along the halls in their internships. Where the beautiful yearning for something unattainable? Where the delicate cocktails served next…
DC-3 for the Recession
People who have lived in the District for over a year inevitably start trying to sum up current and past fads. Usually done with a wave of the hand or toss of the head (or both!), we can say things like, “Yeah, first it was cupcakes, then crepes, now it’s hot dogs. What will those…
Hooked on Delicious in Georgetown
Ahoy, mates! Captain Joel here to tell you about Hook, an impressive seafood restaurant in Georgetown. Sure, it’s been around for awhile, but better late than never, right? This posh eatery provides a wee bit of upscale competition for neighboring Clyde’s in the strangely restaurant-scarce west-of-Wisconsin corridor on M Street. You might be asking yourselves, what are we…
Worth the Investment: POV
It was going to happen sooner or later. Though I hate waiting in line almost as much as being looked up and down appraisingly by bouncers, I knew I would someday get to POV. POV, if you don’t already know, dahling, stands for point of view, and is the rooftop bar at the W Hotel…
A Time to Kill at Arena Stage: Surprisingly Gripping
“I didn’t know what I was in for.” Famous last words….or just the beginning? My first trip to the newly re-opened Arena Stage just off Waterfront Metro station in Southwest was yet another reminder that DC’s theater scene is most certainly first-tier. A Time to Kill is based on John Grisham’s first and most autobiographical novel…
Cold Light and Bioluminescence at The Fridge
The current show at The Fridge, located down an alley and behind a dumpster in Eastern Market, is not a normal show. Not that The Fridge shows very much that is normal or expected, but visiting this exhibition gives one the feeling of swimming underwater. Cool, dark and scintillating, walking around the black lighted space…
